Americans losing their right to vote on October 12th

by Perry Kundert last modified 2007-10-04 06:53

American citizens will be losing their right to vote in the Republican Primaries in several states on October 12th. So, what are they going to do about it?

Urgent News for Citizens of the United States!

Free people of every political stripe -- liberals, conservatives, libertarians, independents -- are awakening to the fact that Ron Paul may be the last hope for America. The Republican party has realized this, and have decided that you need to be prevented from voting for Ron Paul in the Republican Primaries.

Of course, it is fine (and normal) to require that voters in the Republican Primary are... registered Republicans.  The problem is, if you happen to register as a Republican after October 12th, you may not get to vote in the Republican Primaries in your state!  Are you OK with that?  No new Republican party members registered in the last 3 months before the Primaries are allowed to vote, because the might -- just might -- be Ronbots?

Act by October 12th, or lose your right to vote in the Primaries!

As a Canadian, I can only stand by and watch in stunned silence. I even briefly considered if it might be possible to, somehow, gain U.S. Citizenship in time to do my part. But I can't do it in time to make a difference.

The time has come for you to stand. We who do not have the privilege and responsibility of calling your great nation home are looking on, and we are calling for you to awaken!

Take back your nation!

You may not know who Ron Paul is. You may not even care; I can relate. Until recently, I only watched my own country's political process from afar, due to a complete lack of respect for those who strained to gain political office.

You are about to be denied your right to vote!

Your children may look back on this moment and wonder...

What was dad thinking? Why wasn't mom worried?

Is this too melodramatic? How much more liberty are you prepared to give up, to gain an illusion of security?

Perhaps your right to free movement? Maybe that wouldn't be too much, if it prevented just one terrorist attack, right?

Maybe just your hard-won right to protect your family? After all, those rumors about the downfall of law and order in New Orleans can't really be true -- brigands ruling the streets while "free citizens" ran terrified before them! Preposterous!

Maybe just a little sleep, just a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest...

This may be the first true National Emergency you have experienced.

You are about to be denied your right to vote!

"Secretary of State William Gardner has set Oct. 12 as the last day to change affiliation", says the Boston Globe.

Phew! Dodged a bullet, there -- you aren't from New Hampshire!

Wrong!

Many states, in an effort to shut out Ron Paul are now closing their primaries. That means that only Republicans can vote in the Presidential primaries for a Republican candidate. Many states are doing this quickly and quietly and giving people very little time to learn about the new rules. For example, New Hampshire decided only a week ago that you will now have to change your party affiliation by October 12, 2007 or it will be too late to do so. New Hampshire also has a closed primary and only Republicans and possibly Independents will be allowed to vote for Ron Paul.

In New York, you must be registered as a Republican or you cannot vote for Ron Paul and again, you must make this decision by October 12, 2007 or it will be too late. In New York, however, Independents cannot vote for Ron Paul. Same with New Jersey and many states around the nation. I hesitate to give you a link to a site that has correct information about voting in all 50 states because I have yet to find one that does not have an error and besides, this information is changing daily, as Ron Paul gains momentum. The people in power are doing their best to shut out the multitude of voices that want to vote for Ron Paul. If you are a Ron Paul supporter, or even thinking about becoming a Ron Paul supporter, please become a registered Republican immediately so that no matter what your state does to change the rules out from under you, you will still be allowed to vote for this great man.

All of these arbitrary deadlines are designed to keep a candidate such as Ron Paul from gaining momentum and making a last minute push. Effectively, Ron Paul has until October 12, 2007 to get as many Democrats, and others to switch sides in key states like New York and New Hampshire, or they will not be able to vote for Ron Paul in the primaries. That means that the people in power have shortened the Ron Paul campaign to less than two weeks with the stroke of a pen!

What can you do?

Fight!

  • Prepare to vote for Ron Paul, by registering as a Republican. I don't care; hold your nose if you have to!
  • Write to every newspaper you can.
  • Join his Meetup groups and get active!
  • Add him as a friend on Myspace or Facebook.
  • Start a Web Log, and link to as many articles exposing this as you can find.
  • Contribute to the Ron Paul campaign.

Wouldn't it be terrible if this was one of the last times you had the opportunity to do these things?

If they can take away your right to vote, then what else might be taken away?

Digg!

Don't be silly about Americas (sic) losing their right to vote

As a fellow Canadian who has lived in the United States I really must wonder about your comment about Americans losing their right to vote. I'd put it in other terms: why in God's name does the State get involved in the functioning of parties? It cannot help but get involved. Can you, for example, vote in a Liberal party election without being a member? Or the Conservatives? How the primaries are run is a function of the party, and that is how it should remain. Right now with the state interference it is entrenching the two-party American system more than anything.

(editor: this comment was sent to me, but I feel it is representative of many reader's understanding of the situation...)

Perhaps this won't become clear to people 'til closer to the Primaries...

Thanks for the feedback.

I wondered about all the comments like "of course the Republican Party can limit who votes in the Primary"! Perhaps I shouldn't have assumed that this fact was obvious...

What has happened is equivalent to this -- say you decide, 2 months before the Liberal leadership elections, to get informed about what's going on in the party, and you get excited about a leader. So, you decide to join and vote in the upcoming leadership vote.

But, you find out that (quietly), the Liberal party has taken your membership money, but decided that you cannot vote for your preferred candidate -- because you joined after a certain date *months* ago! You discover that the reason for this bizarre change in rules (never happened before, or even considered!) was because -- too many people were getting excited about a candidate that the current crop of front runners and party hacks didn't like!

So, while I appreciate your feedback, it appears that most people won't grasp the gravity of what is going on, 'til, oh, about the 15th of October. Or, worse yet, in the weeks coming up to the Primary:

"Ah, Mr. Voter -- I see you aren't "really" a Republican; you didn't join before October 13th. You needn't bother showing up to vote."

Wonderful.
